HTH have a football team which plays in the South Manchester and Cheshire Christian Football League (SMCCFL).The team was formed by Dai Roberts in 1998, playing friendlies against a few local churches whom we knew also had active football teams. As a result of these friendlies and other contacts, the SMCCFL was formed and Hurdsfield were one of six teams who played in that first season of the new league, 1999-2000.
This season (2011-2012) the league consists of 22 teams in three divisions, with the top two divisions each compromising of eight teams. All clubs/teams in the league represent local churches and Christian organisations in the Cheshire and Manchester area. This season HTH FC is in Division 2 and will play 14 league matches as well as the matches for the League cup competition. Matches are played on Saturday mornings with a 10.30am kick off and supporters are always welcome. Home games are usually played at King George playing field, Windmill Street.
The team is made up of a core of players from HTH, with players from a few other churches and some non-Christian friends. We are always on the lookout for new players who are over 16 years old.
SMCCFL is for football teams from church or other Christian organisation. The matches are competitive and of a good football standard but always played fair and friendly which makes our Christian league different to secular football leagues. One of the stated aims of SMCCFL is to use football to spread the Good News through contact with people who wouldn’t normally go to church. Each team has some non-Christian players and we aim to witness through actions and behaviour to non-Christians, to develop friendships to hopefully enable us to share the Good News at the appropriate time. For some of the teams in the league, the football team is a central part of their church’s community and outreach work with older teenage boys and young men.
